Honest Burgers, Kings Cross

May I suggest a disclaimer to this description that if you prefer anything over medium well, don’t waste your money – go home and chew on cardboard instead.

SO. After my friends and I enjoyed our annual Swingers visit (the mini golf place, mind you) and all parted ways, I decided to make a quick pit stop to somewhere I could review for this blog. One thing about me is; I really, really love discovering places…by myself. I think it’s perfectly fine to take yourself out on little dates sometimes, whether it be to the cinema, to eat, for coffee etc. So I didn’t mind at all the fact that I would be eating by myself.

I stopped off at Kings Cross St. Pancras station, played a game I like to call ‘Google Maps Eatery Roulette,’ and decided on Honest Burgers. The google reviews were promising and after a quick perusing of the website I thought ‘why not’ – I was getting authentically British, indie, my-burgers-are-different-to-your-burgers vibes and that was good enough for me.

First impression: I stepped in and my first thought was “I totally am not cool enough to eat here.” It felt like the ultimate millennial hang out, and I could tell that the staff didn’t know whether to be confused or impressed by my #edgy self when they asked if I needed a table for two and I said “no, it’s just me…” And if you think I’m overreacting about how #indie, #different it was, if me telling you that you could host your own burger making birthday party in the basement doesn’t convince you then I’m not sure what will.

I must say, I was impressed with the homeliness of the menu – British beef / chicken complimented with simple ingredients, I didn’t even mind that it was on the pricey side – you can’t skimp on quality right?

Whenever I see a ‘double up’ option I always take it as a personal challenge, so of course I did!

As the google reviews promised, my food came quickly, and then it all went wrong.

Now. Before I get “Tifé, what did you expect when you butcher good beef by asking for it medium well?” Look. If you are going to charge £17, yes £17 for a burger and chips, surely you can accommodate my apparently strange beef preference and still do your meat justice! Unfortunately, this was not the case: I got double the burger and triple the disappointment – my meat was not seasoned. With no salt / pepper options on the table I was resigned to eat my burger without, and it was a truly harrowing experience.

Overall impression: Maybe I am being harsh, or it just wasn’t seasoned to my (in my opinion) reasonable standards. Maybe in the future I will attempt their various specials at different locations, to ascertain whether or not all Honest Burgers are serially dishonest to my tastebuds.

N.B – To rub salt into the wound (instead of on my burger) it was only when I looked at the menu online to put on this blog that I realised they have a student deal!  This was nowhere to be found on the menu, and the staff didn’t mention it either! Not only was I robbed of a pleasurable meaty experience but I was actually… robbed. 😦
